When the BenQ W5000 arrived all boxed up, you can’t help thinking it must be mighty precious to afford so much packaging. But this £1500 projector is also 9.6kg and 492 x 180 x 420mm so there isn’t much in the box apart from this monster. But it has an awful lot to pack in to produce the image quality that it delivers.

Excellent contrast and black level. Don’t let the 10,000:1 contrast rating fool you. That is a relatively low number in today’s competitive market where contrast specifications range from 15,000:1 up to 50,000:1. But in any given scene, the real contrast you experience on the W5000 is in many instances higher than that of competing models with much higher contrast ratings.

BenQ has a history of making some very excellent projectors. They now appear to be in a mode whereby they are attempting to really bring some incredible value and quality to consumers with their W5000 and W20000 DLP systems. The two projectors are remarkably similar; however the W5000 lacks some of the optical engine refinements of its bigger sibling and therefore has a slightly lower contrast ratio. The two share the same chassis, menu system and general features, so it’s a good bet that many will find the W5000 to be the bargain of the lot.

Turning to the W5000’s connections, there’s good news and bad news. On the upside, you get two HDMIs, BNC- and RCA-type component video inputs, PC inputs, a 12V trigger jack, and an RS-232 port for external system control. On the downside the HDMIs are only built to the v1.2 spec, not the latest v1.3, and so aren’t compatible with Deep Colour or x.v.Colour picture sources.

Overall, the W5000 is one of the largest home theater projectors, but an impressive one, especially with that large lens hood. It is about the size of the JVC RS1 and RS2, but a little taller, and finished in off white, and silver, making it appear bulkier than the JVC, which is finished in black. No doubt some would prefer the W5000 to have a darker finish, but we can’t all get what we want.
The W5000 is most impressive, though, when watching content, so it’s time to consider this BenQ W5000 projector’s image quality.
