JVC brings a new profile to the rear projection TV category with a pair of new sets in its HD-ILA line that feature dramatically reduced cabinet depth. Two screen sizes will be offered, 58 and 65 inches, with cabinet depths of 10.7 and 11.6 inches, respectively.
The new shallow cabinet is made possible by the development of a new optical engine, which will be offered in two new HD-ILA televisions – the 58-inch HD-58S998 and the 65-inch HD-65S998. Both sets bring a new look to the rear projection TV category. Both will easily fit on most stands and furniture designed for flat panel TVs. In addition, the sets’ unique side heat dissipation design and side connections allow the sets to be placed flush against the wall, or even hung on the wall for further placement and décor flexibility. An optional JVC stand designed specifically for use with the new slim HD-ILA sets will also be available.

JVC’s new sets include all the same technology offered in other HD-ILA televisions, so they deliver the same outstanding image quality for both standard and high definition material. JVC’s Super Cinema Iris with Smart Picture responds to scene content to provide a contrast ratio of 10,000:1 for optimum black levels and accurate gradation in dark scenes. The sets also employ JVC’s Genessa 32-bit CPU video processing, incorporating the fifth generation of JVC’s D.I.S.T. (Digital Image Scaling Technology). D.I.S.T. seamlessly up-scales any video source to display at full high definition 1080p. Standard definition signals are improved through better IP conversion, improved scaler performance and a new PLL system that improves the performance of a composite signal.

As with most HDTVs, the JVC HD-58S998 can get blindingly bright, so our first step in adjusting it for our darkened room was to attenuate the light output around 35 FTl. We ended up reducing the Picture and Iris controls almost all the way to make that happen, but the end result was a big improvement in black levels. In addition, we adjusted the Warm color temperature preset via service menu calibration. Prior to adjustment, the Warm preset came relatively close to the 6,500K standard, although it tended to get bluer the brighter the image became–a characteristic that calibration couldn’t completely fix. As a result the set’s grayscale tracking wasn’t as good as we would have liked. From the front, the JVC HD-58S998 looks like a typically sleek, modern-day HDTV, and in fact it’s one of the most attractive examples we’ve seen yet. We love that the bezel along the top and sides of the screen’s edge measures a mere 1/3 of an inch wide (!), even thinner than that of the former thin-bezel champ, Mitsubishi’s WD-65831. That sliver of a bezel allows this 58-inch set to occupy just 51.5 inches of width. As is par for the RPTV course, the area below the screen is significantly chunkier and glossy black, interrupted only by a big JVC logo and a cool-looking power indicator that can be disabled–a boon for home theater fanatics who demand a minimum of superfluous illumination. All told, the HD-58S998 is probably as compact as any 58-inch RPTV could be, measuring 51.5×37.9×10.8 inches, and weighing a feathery 115 pounds.

The HD58S998 HD-ILA is ready for the lastest technology with two HDMI inputs that can accept a 1080p input. This is the highest resolution HD signal that is available. This makes the HD58S998 the perfect choice for seeing the best possible picture from your Blu-ray disc player as well as future HD-DVD players and game consoles. In addition, HDMI is the perfect all-digital connection for D-VHS high definition VCRs as well as upconverting DVD players and recorders with an HDMI ouptut. The HD58S998 also has two auto sensing component video inputs, a PC input, S-Video and AV inputs. There’s also a fixed audio output.
