Mitsubishi combines its highest-performance technologies and most stylish designs to create a series of HDTVs deserving of the name “Diamond.” They match the latest 1080p DLP(R) chip, Mitsubishi`s proprietary 6-Primary Color System, TurboLight180(TM), an all-new 180 Watt lamp system, and new high-contrast screen technology for bolder, brighter images. These models also offer capabilities well ahead of the pack, including Dark Detailer(TM) for deep blacks and rich dark scene detail, PerfectColor(TM) to adjust the intensity of six separate colors, and PerfecTint(TM) to control each color’s tint independently of each other and separately for every input.

The 831 Series is also Digital Cable Ready with a CableCARD(TM) slot, and offers TV Guide On Screen(R) and ClearThought(R) Easy Connect. The Multi-Format Memory Card Reader enables the viewing of digital photos. DV and HDV decoders allow direct connection of digital and high definition camcorders. And NetCommand(R) with IR learning provides onebutton control of an entire home theater system.

Six-segment color wheels are not uncommon in today’s DLP sets. But these segments are, typically, just multiples of the primary colors: red, green, and blue (multiple segments of the same color help reduce rainbow artifacts). But the six-segment color wheels on all Mitsubishi DLP sets (except their current 73-inch models) have segments for not only the three primary colors, but for the three secondary colors as well. Mitsubishi claims that this results in an improvement in color brightness and accuracy.

Mitsubishi’s TurboLight180 has pushed lamp technology to its limit! This unique, patented optical design focuses light more efficiently on the teeny tiny mirrors that make up the DLP chip. More efficient focusing means better reflection, which translates into a brighter picture. The 180 watt TurboLight used in the WD65831 produces a brighter image without increasing the amount of power consumed or heat produced; therefore it does not compromise the life or performance of the lamp itself. Mitsubishi’s exclusive TurboLight technology directs more light to the DLP chip surface resulting in a brighter, more vivid on-screen image.

Big-screen rear-projection HDTVs are inexorably giving up ground to flat-panel models, and thanks to plasma and flat LCD price erosion, that process is happening more quickly than ever. Today sales of more-expensive 50-inch plasmas equal or exceed sales of cheaper 50-inch projection sets, and it’s just a matter of time before even bigger, 60-inch plasmas are available for prices that challenge RPTVs. Until then, however, people who want a 60-inch-plus HDTV are generally going to go with projection.

The Mitsubishi WD-65831 can produce a great-looking picture, but it takes a bit of work. After setup, we appreciated its deep blacks and solid shadow detail; clean, uniform picture; and sharp images from 1080-resolution sources. We would have liked to see better color accuracy both before and after calibration, but the myriad controls helped this issue quite a bit.

Each Diamond HDTV model is Digital Cable Ready with a CableCARD slot and TV Guide On Screen. Both televisions also have two HDMI inputs, three component video inputs and a PC DVI-I input for a digital PC connection. ClearThought Easy Connect recognizes inputs as they are plugged in to simplify set up and day-to-day operation. And NetCommand allows for simple icon based control of most any brand of TV set top box, AV receiver or other home theater component from the included fully-illuminated remote or additional simple remote.
