Thanks to a new, long-lasting LED light engine, the Full HD (1920 x 1080p) picture of the HL-T5689S DLP® HDTV will last as long as the set. The Samsung HL-T5689S is a 56-inch slim-depth widescreen (16×9)1080p high-definition rear projection TV that features LED illumination instead of the standard UHP or arc lamp. And, because LED illumination is employed, it also eliminates the much-maligned color wheel, which some people find objectionable because it contributes to the so-called “rainbow effect.” This set is also part of Samsung’s new slim line of HD rear projection DLP TVs offering a depth of only 14-inches, which is far slimmer than comparable 56-inch rear projection HDTVs.

The HLT5689’s wide screen aspect ratio means your screen is filled with DVD and HDTV images which are increasingly available and presented in wide screen formats. The Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) makes the sharpest and clearest images possible, regardless of the profile of input signals. Five image processors and a six-times density enhancer ensure the best picture from any source. Now in its sixth generation (since 2002), DNIe guarantees the truest colors and highest contrast, while virtually eliminating digital artifacts. With My Color Control, you can customize pink, green, and blue colors to your taste without affecting the other colors on the screen. Add to that a 10,000:1 contrast ratio, and you’ll see details you’ve never picked up before.

The connector panel is within fairly accessible reach on the back on the right side. It houses all of the plugs that we have come to expect, plus a couple of extras. To begin, there are three HDMI inputs. The third is paired with stereo Audio Ins. The two Component inputs (YPbPr) also have matching stereo Audio Ins, as do the two Composite. Rounding out the crew are two S-Video Ins, a VGA connector with a stereo audio minijack for PC input, (though you also could attach your PC with a DVI to HDMI cable), an SPDIF (optical) digital Audio Out and a Service port (RS232C).

The HL-T5689S includes Samsung’s Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) processing and Cinema Smooth light engine, designed to reduce visible pixel structure and improve fine detail. The well-designed menu system contains a nice assortment of picture adjustments, including white-balance controls, a choice of three color gamuts (wide, normal and sRGB), and a My Color Control that lets you fine-tune pink, green and blue hues independently. There are six aspect ratio choices, including a Just Scan mode for viewing 1080i/1080p images with no overscan.
