Prepare yourself for high definition entertainment as defined by Sony. As part of Sony’s Grand WEGA HDTV series, the KDS50A2000 offers refinements in picture quality with advanced imaging technology. Its exclusive WEGA Engine System maintains a beautiful HD digital picture by converting all signals to digital and applying an entire system of processes to improve resolution, sharpness, contrast, and expanded picture dimensionality. All the various signals your HDTV receives, such as Standard Definition broadcasts, composite video, component video, and high-definition video (interlaced or progressive) will benefit from the WEGA Engine because it accurately maintains a digital picture from the first to the last stage, giving you superb picture quality from any video source.

The KDS-50A2000 uses SXRD image panels with full HD resolution: 1920 x 1080 pixels. There are other types of 1080p displays, but SXRD boasts the highest “pixel density” of any TV available, as well as the tightest between-pixel spacing. The distance from the middle of one pixel to the middle of the next is only about 1/8 the width of a human hair! Images possess jaw-dropping clarity, detail and depth, but the most striking quality is a silky smoothness that creates a more filmlike look.

Advanced Iris is a special Sony function designed to improve brightness and contrast expression especially in darker scenes. It is accessed inside the Picture Menu and offers 2 Auto settings and 5 Manual settings. Auto 1 and Auto 2 are dynamic adjustments that automatically open and close the iris according to the gamma level of the picture on the screen. Auto 1 is best used for viewing video content that has a large variation in brightness from scene to scene. Auto 2 is best for viewing video content that has less variation in brightness from scene to scene. The 5 manual settings (Max, High, Medium, Low, and Min) can be used to adjust the iris opening to allow the best possible picture viewing depending on ambient room lighting conditions. For instance, High works well for viewing in brightly lit rooms. Low is a good setting for viewing in low light conditions.

LCoS, the predecessor technology, is a combination of both the reflective approach of DLP (millions of actuated micro-mirrors on a chip reflect light required for the display) and the transmissive approach of LCD (millions of liquid crystals act as valves passing through light required for the display). In LCoS, liquid crystals are applied to a reflective mirror substrate with the polarization of liquid crystals being used for light transmission control and the mirror below reflecting the light or not as required for image display. LCOS microdisplays are mostly of a three-chip configuration for the three primary colors. As with DLP microdisplays, LCoS relies on projecting the three primary colors rapidly enough so that the eye combines them into a single color.
