The LG BD300 is a feature-packed Blu-ray player, with BD-Live, a USB port for viewing multimedia, and Netflix on-demand streaming (if you already have, or choose to get, a Netflix account). For $350 (as of 2/18/09), though, we expected better-looking images. This player is one of only three Blu-ray players available so far that can handle Netflix’s streaming video–the others are the Samsung BD-P2500 and the Samsung BD-P2550 (a Best Buy-exclusive version of the BD-P2500). While the Netflix functionality is a cool idea, it isn’t a foolproof approach to viewing video.

Aside from Netflix, the BD300 is a capable Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player with solid image quality. Even better, the list price has fallen all the way to $350, which means you’re paying a relatively small premium for Netflix over competitors like the Sony BDP-S350. There are better options to consider if you’re just interested in Blu-ray playback, such as the Panasonic DMP-BD35, but if you’d like to supplement your high-definition movies with Netflix content, the BD300 is a compelling package.

The BD300 has a clean, attractive appearance, with a smaller-than-average footprint for a Blu-ray player. The mostly black chassis has a few silver accents and an uncluttered front panel that hides the disc drive behind a flip-down door on the left side. In the center, you’ll find a small LCD screen, as well as buttons for play/pause, stop, forward and reverse. To the right is a USB port that’s also hidden by a pop-on cover. This port supports playback of MP3, WMA and JPEG files, and is necessary for BD-Live functionality. The BD300 doesn’t have internal storage, so you must add a USB storage drive (not included) whenever to you wish to download BD-Live features from the Web.

The BD300 is really second to none when it comes to doing what Blu-ray players are meant to do: play Blu-ray Discs. While those who still enjoy DVDs might want to pass on this one because of its second rate DVD upconverting ability, for most it shouldn’t be a big deal — it isn’t that it is bad at upconverting, it’s just that it isn’t as good as others like the BD-P2500 from Samsung. But overall, when compared to just about everything else in its price range, there really is no comparison. It is fast, uses very little power, is nearly silent, outputs all the latest audio codecs via bitstream, features discrete IR commands for power, and produces the stunning picture quality we’ve come to expect from Blu-ray.
