The Samsung BD-P1600 comes complete with all the features we now expect on Blu-ray players, including Profile 2.0 compatibility and onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. But the BD-P1600 goes beyond the basics, adding improved operational speed, Netflix and Pandora streaming, and the ability to add Wi-Fi functionality with a USB dongle (sold separately.) By far, the BD-P1600′s biggest fault is its annoying flip-down panel that occupies the entire front of the unit. However, if you can live with the design misstep, the BD-P1600 offers an excellent value for its performance and features.

The Samsung BD-P1600 1080p Blu-Ray disc player has a beautiful design. Measuring at just 8 inches long and 2 inches tall, this sleek little player can be subtly slipped into your TV cabinet. It has a black, high-gloss front panel. There are no physical buttons on the front panel, and when it is on stand-by mode, all you see is the time display from behind the gloss panel. It is undoubtedly one of the best looking players out there.

The BD-P1600 comes with a USB 2.0 port for use with a 1GB flash drive (for BD-Live functions) and for playing MP3 music and displaying JPEG photos. To find the files you want to play, though, you have to search through folders on your flash drive (or external hard drive). Another problem: Though the USB port doesn’t support video, a poorly placed menu option suggests that it does. The player has on-board audio decoding of Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HS Master Audio Essential.

Instantly streaming movies and TV episodes from Netflix is done through a broadband connection and a Netflix Queue-based user interface. Netflix members visit the Netflix Web site to add movies and TV episodes to their individual instant Queues. Those choices will automatically be displayed on members’ TVs and available to watch instantly through the Samsung players. Once selected, movies will begin playing in as little as 30 seconds. With the included remote control, Netflix members can browse and make selections right on the TV screen, read synopses and rate movies, and fast-forward or rewind the video stream.

The BD-P1600′s setup menu is a good-looking, legible full-screen affair, though it lacks explanations of its options. If you press the remote’s Display button while watching a movie, a big box on the side will pop up, listing the title, chapter numbers, time elapsed, and some technical information. When you press Pause or skip to the next chapter, a leaner, more useful information display pops up, showing you time elapsed and total time.

This Samsung unit is one of the fastest Blu-ray players we’ve tested, getting a disc up and running in just 42 seconds. There’s a very slight wait when you skip a chapter, and none at all when you press Pause.

While the BD-P1600′s Wi-Fi and ethernet connectivity options are great for accessing online content, they aren’t the only important connections. No HD device is complete without an HDMI connection. As the most advanced digital interface, HDMI is capable of transmitting HD video and audio via a single cable. Ensuring that all 1920 x 1080 pixels of your Blu-ray Disc movie reach your HDTV, Samsung has outfitted the BD-P1600 with an HDMI output. While a component video output offers further video connectivity, digital optical audio output offers versatile audio connectivity. Finally, two USB terminals make it easy to view photos or listen to music stored on a USB flash drive.
