The STR-DA5400ES is loaded with features such as Sony’s own room correction and speaker set-up system, called Digital Cinema Auto Calibration, which, like Audyssey, can automatically determine and set speaker size, distance, polarity, angle, height and recommended equalization. The Sony also includes Sirius and XM radio capabilities to supplement your local AM/FM stations, two video processing chips by Faroudja (one each for zones one and two), zone one and two graphic user interfaces that are based upon the cross bar design popularized by the PS3, Digital Legato Linear audio processing to improve compressed audio, multiple headphone processing modes and a seven-channel 120-watts-per-channel amplifier.

Even without the Internet, the STR-DA5400ES is a versatile receiver with six HDMI inputs and two outputs (compatible with 1080p/60, 1080p/24, Deep Color, and x.v.Color video signals). It also has three component video inputs and a pair of Faroudja video-processing chips (so you can upconvert in two zones). Its dual digital media port inputs allow you to use the receiver to listen to an iPod or other digital device (using optional adapters) in up to three rooms, as well as XM and/or Sirius satellite radio (subscription required). A Cat-5e output works with the optional CAV-CVB1 component video box ($129). This lets you move high-definition video (up to 1080i) and audio content to a second room where the second supplied remote can control the receiver via an onscreen GUI. If the movie you’re watching in the living room is putting you to sleep, you can move to the bedroom and continue watching or (snoozing) in HD.

Using full-range floorstanding speakers all-round, leaving the sub purely for LFE duties, the DA5400ES’s control throughout the frequency range is as thrilling as it is addictive. It’s so tight and focused it hurts; action movies are a full-throttle adrenaline ride from start to finish.

Dialogue is crisp and clean and, unlike some of its peers, it manages to avoid making all male actors sound like they are auditioning for Carlsberg adverts. The top-end is refined and polished, keeping high-frequency effects on the glassy edge without falling into sibilance. Brilliant.
