The routine worked pretty well for most of my components, except for a Cables-To-Go (Impact Acoustics) HDMI switch which I could not find listed in any of the expected categories. Fortunately, the R50 also allows you to learn commands from an existing factory remote control if the R50′s code database comes up empty. Teaching the R50 the power on/off and input buttons of this device should have been a simple affair, pressing the desired button on the R50 followed by the corresponding button on the original remote. But unfortunately, the first time through, only about half of the buttons were successfully learned. It took four attempts for the R50 to finally learn the “Power On” function from the switch’s remote. But once that was done, the R50 could successfully control all operations of the HDMI switch.

The URC R50 is one of the easiest remotes we’ve ever attempted set up, which is a large part of its appeal—especially for the non-technically inclined. The packaging includes a one-sheet guide to help you get started, but you really don’t even need that. Why? An intuitive setup wizard is ready to take you through the simple steps to get your gear up and running and consolidate your remote controls. (If it should fail to launch, just hit the Main button for a few seconds, and away you go.) We successfully programmed a DirecTV receiver, Oppo Digital DVD player, Sony receiver and Panasonic TV in minutes. The only component we had trouble with was our PlayStation 3, but more on that later.

Capitalizing on such a successful design, URC has re-released the same basic model with new features several times since, adding RF in the MX-600 and MX-650, computer programmability in the MX-700 and MX-800, and updated materials in the most recent MX-850. All of these models are intended for the professional custom installation market, but the company’s URC and RF lines (read our review) share similar looks and design ideals and are aimed squarely at consumers. I guess you really can’t have too much of a good thing!
